AP 150 Years

Joe Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, one of the most widely reproduced in the world, is a monument to the U.S. Marines – literally. The model for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Va., Rosenthal's AP photo captures six Marines raising an American flag atop Mt. Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima after the bloodiest battle in the history of the Corps on Feb. 23, 1945. For decades, Rosenthal fought rumors that the photo was staged, but the facts back him up.
