Clint Bowling, grandson of Iree and Bass, wrassles with his mom, Polly. Clint was engaged several times to a high school classmate, Shirley, who, his mother cautioned, was not from people like the Bowlings ("They had money and they had things we didn't have"). Shirley might have been Clint's ticket out of the hollow, where he sees no future for himself. Although Clint tried to hold their engagement together, ultimately Shirley broke it off. Clint left home, came back several times but still says: "I'll be leaving here shortly again."
