A Grassroots Movement

Since its beginning in 1984, the all volunteer Washington Area Music Assoc. has sought to heighten awareness of the region's great music history as well as bring attention to the local musicians who regularly play in its many clubs and concert halls.

At the 1997 Wammie Awards, R and B vocalist Ruth Brown (a Virginia native) shows why she's called "Miss Rhythm. WAMA's all-volunteer run annual awards show, the Wammies, draws many of the region's legends to its stage.
